Spotlight #1: The Answers

Spotlight #1: The Answers

So, how many out of five? All the photos were taken with a Kideo microscope, both at home and outdoors.

1. Salt

Salt spilled on a table

Each grain of salt is a tiny crystal. To the naked eye, it looks like nothing more than white powder; under a microscope, you can see each grain one by one, like tiny ice cubes.

2. A sheet

The Kideo microscope placed on a sheet

A piece of fabric is made up of thousands of threads that run over and under each other, like a woven basket. Under a microscope, you can see each row of threads. (The green color is caused by the screen’s lighting; in reality, the sheet is light-colored.)

3. Lichen

The Kideo microscope examining lichen

Lichen is a fungus and an alga living together: one provides shelter, the other provides nourishment. It doesn't tolerate pollution well, so seeing a lot of it on trees is a pretty good sign for air quality.

4. A cookie crumb

A cookie crumb under the Kideo microscope, with the Kideo map

A crumb is like a tiny landscape: grains of flour and sugar stuck together by baking, with air pockets. And often a few fibers that were left on the table.

5. Coral

A piece of coral in my hand

Each of these holes was home to a tiny animal, a polyp. Coral is neither a plant nor a rock: it is built by animals.

2. A bed sheet

Fabric consists of thousands of threads interlaced with one another, like a woven basket. Under a microscope, you can see every row of threads. (The green color is caused by the screen's lighting; the sheet is actually pale.)

3. Lichen

4. A cookie crumb

A crumb is a whole little landscape: grains of flour and sugar stuck together by baking, full of air pockets. And often a few fibers that were lying on the table.

5. Coral

Each of these holes was once home to a tiny animal called a polyp. Coral isn't a plant or a rock—it's built by animals.
